New legislation under the Local Authorities Elections Act now requires municipalities across Alberta to have a Permanent Electors Register (PER).
Please ensure that you are registered to vote and that your information is up to date by visiting the Voterlink website.
To vote, you must prove your identity and current address.
If you ARE ON the Permanent Electors Register (PER):
- ONE government-issued photo ID that includes your name, physical (or mailing) address, and photo. This government-issued ID must match what is on the Permanent Electors Register.
If you are NOT on the Permanent Electors Register (PER):
If you are not on the Permanent Electors Register (PER) or need to register at a new physical address, you will need additional identification to prove your physical address (i.e. legal land description, lot-block-plan, or rural address) prior to voting.
- ONE Government-issued photo ID that includes your name, physical (or mailing) address and photo;
- AN ADDITIONAL document that supports proof of residence, such as:
- Tax Notice
- Utility Bill (Electric, Gas, Water, Cable, Telephone, Internet)
- Residential Lease or Sublease
- Prescription Bottle Insert or Container
- AND the completed and signed FORM 13 issued at the polling station
NOTE: A passport cannot be used as one piece of identification, as the address is handwritten by the individual.
If you are an Alberta resident who can legally live in Canada and do not have a valid government-issued photo ID, you can apply for an ID card to use as photo identification by visiting Registry Services.
